Where the Savings Actually Come From#
A smart thermostat itself doesn't save energy — it saves energy by making it easier to do things you'd otherwise forget or avoid doing manually:
- Setback scheduling — automatically reducing heating/cooling when you're asleep or away, without you needing to remember to adjust it
- Geofencing — using your phone's location to detect when you've left or returned, and adjusting accordingly
- Occupancy sensing — some models detect whether rooms are in use
- Usage reports — surfacing where your energy is going, which can itself change behavior
Why Real-World Savings Vary So Much#
- Households that already manually adjusted their thermostat see smaller gains, since they were already doing what the smart thermostat automates
- Climate matters — homes with large heating/cooling loads (very hot or very cold climates) tend to see bigger absolute savings than mild climates
