- A home battery stores a fixed amount of energy and discharges it silently. Its big advantage: it's quiet, emission-free, requires no refueling, and can do double duty every day (storing solar, shifting usage to cheaper rate periods — see energy arbitrage) — not just sit idle waiting for an outage.
Runtime: Generators Win for Long Outages#
This is the clearest practical difference.

Limited only by fuel supply; a standby model tied to a natural gas line can run indefinitely.
A typical single home battery stores enough to run essentials (fridge, lights, internet, maybe a well pump) for roughly 12–24 hours, depending on how much you're backing up. For a longer outage, you either need multiple batteries — see whether whole-home backup is worth it — or you ration usage.
A generator, by contrast, keeps going as long as it has fuel — a standby model tied to a natural gas line can run for days. For extended or multi-day outages, a generator is the more capable choice.
Where the Battery Wins#
- No noise or emissions — batteries run silently and produce nothing to vent, unlike a generator's engine noise and exhaust
- No refueling — nothing to store, deliver, or run out of at 2 a.m.
- Everyday value — this is the big one: a battery earns its keep on normal days by storing solar production and discharging during expensive peak-rate windows. A generator does nothing until the power fails.
- Instant, seamless switchover — batteries typically kick in fast enough that you may not notice the outage; many generators take a few seconds to start.
Cost Comparison#
Both are significant purchases, and ranges overlap:
- Standby generators: often lower upfront than a comparable whole-home battery setup, but add fuel costs over time and periodic maintenance (oil changes, servicing)
- Home batteries: higher upfront (often $12,000–$16,500+ installed for a single unit), but no fuel cost, minimal maintenance, and potential everyday savings — especially when paired with solar
Incentives used to close much of that upfront gap for batteries and no longer reliably do.
Before you count on a rebate
The 2026 position is not the one most coverage still describes. The federal credits under 25C and 25D closed to work completed after 31 December 2025, and HEAR no longer funds gas-to-electric swaps outside a few exceptions.

- Consider both — some homeowners pair a battery (for daily use and seamless short-outage coverage) with a generator (for rare extended outages). It's the most capable setup, at the highest cost.
The right answer comes down to your outage patterns and whether you want a device that only works during emergencies or one that also pays its way year-round. Get quotes for both, sized to what you actually need to back up — estimate that runtime first so you're pricing a system that matches your outages, and line the quotes up side by side once they arrive.
