"How much does a home battery cost?" has a frustrating answer: it depends — on capacity, battery chemistry, brand, your home's electrical setup, and where you live. But you can still get a realistic budgeting range. Here's how the numbers break down in 2026.
Hardware Cost vs. Installed Cost#
The single most important distinction: the battery unit price is not what you'll pay. Installed cost — including labor, electrical work, and permitting — is typically 30–60% higher than the hardware alone.
For a popular reference point, the Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh usable) runs roughly $9,200–$10,500 for the unit, and commonly $12,000–$16,500 fully installed for a single unit, depending heavily on location and site conditions. A nominal "10 kWh" system from other brands lands in a broadly similar range, though smaller-capacity units cost less.
What's Actually in the Installed Price#
Beyond the battery itself, you're paying for:
- Electrical labor — typically $1,500–$2,500 for a licensed electrician to handle wiring, panel connections, and configuration
- Permitting and inspection — roughly $100–$600 depending on your municipality
- Possible electrical panel upgrade — if your existing panel can't support the battery, this can add meaningfully to the total

Incentives: The Biggest Wildcard#

The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) has ended. The IRS states the credit "will not be allowed for any expenditures made after December 31, 2025", and treats an expenditure as made when the original installation is completed — so paying in 2025 for a battery installed in 2026 does not qualify. - State and utility incentives remain active in many areas.
