The most persistent myth about heat pumps is that they "don't work" in cold climates. This was largely true of older heat pump technology from decades ago — it is not an accurate description of modern cold-climate heat pumps.

What Changed#

Modern cold-climate heat pumps use variable-speed compressors and improved refrigerant technology that allow them to continue extracting heat from outdoor air at much lower temperatures than older units could manage. Many current cold-climate models are rated to maintain meaningful heating capacity down to -15°F to -20°F, with some continuing to operate, at reduced capacity, below that.

Where the Myth Comes From#

  • Older heat pump models (pre-2010s, broadly) did lose significant efficiency and capacity well before 0°F, often requiring backup electric resistance heat in genuinely cold weather
  • Poorly sized or poorly installed systems — a heat pump sized for a mild climate, installed in a cold one, will underperform regardless of the underlying technology
  • Backup heat still exists in most systems — even excellent cold-climate heat pumps are usually paired with backup heat strips or a furnace for the coldest days, which some homeowners interpret as the heat pump "failing," when it's actually a normal, designed-in fallback. What to Look For When Shopping#

  • Look specifically for "cold-climate" or "cold-weather" rated heat pump models — this is a specific product category, not just any heat pump
  • Check the manufacturer's capacity retention at low temperatures (e.g., "% of rated capacity at 5°F"), not just the headline efficiency number
  • Confirm proper sizing via a load calculation (Manual J) for your specific home and climate, not a rule-of-thumb estimate
  • Check what rebates you qualify for before you sign — cold-climate models often carry their own incentive tier, though most states still can't take an application at all
