Almost nobody knows how their electricity bill divides up — and without that, every upgrade decision is a guess. Three months of bills — one hot, one cold, one mild — is enough to see roughly how much goes to heating, how much to cooling, and how much the house draws no matter the weather.

How This Estimate Works

  1. Baseload comes from a mild month — April, May, October or November. In most homes there is a period when neither the heating nor the cooling system does much work, and what the house draws then is roughly what it draws all year regardless of weather: fridge, water heater, lighting, electronics, standby draw.
  2. Cooling and heating are whatever sits above that floor in the summer and winter months respectively, scaled to a full season when you have supplied only part of one. Shoulder months contribute to neither — the excess there is usually small, and attributing it would be invention.
  3. Findings compare your baseload against your floor area and your seasonal peaks against your baseline. They are deliberately quiet: a warning that fires for every house teaches you to ignore all of them.

The mild month is not optional decoration — it is what makes the arithmetic possible. Given only a summer and a winter month, the lower of the two becomes the baseline by definition, its own season's excess becomes zero, and the tool would confidently report that you use no electricity for cooling. If you haven't entered a mild month, the results panel says so rather than showing you that zero.

Within the mild months we take the lowest, which biases baseload slightly low and therefore heating and cooling slightly high. That is the safer direction: it never tells you your heating is cheaper than it really is.

This is a rough split from billing data, not a metered study. It answers “where does my money actually go”, which most homeowners have never seen.
