- Have existing good ductwork? A ducted heat pump is often the more economical whole-home choice, since you're reusing infrastructure.
- Have no ductwork? Ductless is usually far cheaper than installing ducts from scratch just to run a ducted system.
- Need many zones? Costs rise with the number of indoor heads — at some point, a ducted approach may become competitive again.

- No ducts + specific rooms/additions + want zoning → ductless
